Povl Larsen is a Danish designer working in Silver and Gold who's work incorporates a range of beautiful Stones.
His work is of fine strong quality, appealing to male and female inclinations. His minimalist style exudes power and beauty, endurance.
Povl's style, his joy in solid structures and artist's appreciation of colour draws one's thoughts with immediacy and excitement to the landscapes of his native homeland and his beloved Cornwall, of rugged coastlines and rocky landscapes, the wide, deep seas and ancient glacial might. The presence of the powers that shape natural forms...
This heightened sense of time and place, of presence, evokes our senses in the colours; wonderful hues of deep, deep blues, and greys, swirling patterns in solid, silver surrounds. Warm, strong golds, enfolding vibrant reds and greens.
He works with a selection of Lapis Lazuli, Mother of Pearl, Obsidian, Malachite, also Charoite, Turquoise, Alabone and Rhodocriste.
He has won Anglo-Danish Scholarships on two occasions, one of these was for his work as a jewellery teacher for the Deaf, at the Royal School for the Deaf, Exeter.
During the 1970's in Denmark, Povl was the Head Goldsmith at OLE HELM and a Silversmith at LOUIS OSMAN Silversmith and Architect, in the U.K.
These years also included a period of study with HANS BUNDE, Carl M. Cohr Silverfabric, in Denmark.
First selected for representation on the GOLDSMITHS' HALLS WHO'S WHO IN GOLD AND SILVER in 2004.
Povl's work is exhibited at the Mid Cornwall Galleries at Par in Cornwall and at The Stone Gallery in June, at Burford, Oxfordshire.
Povl works and writes in Cardiff, lecturing on Business Analysis and Productivity Methods in Manufacturing. His special interest is in Innovation and Quality in production methods in small and medium high growth businesses.
"My silverware and jewellery uses inlays of exotic woods or abalone, mother of pearl and or paua shells or stones such as malachite, turquoise, lapis lazuli, amethyst, etc., to add colour and for functional reasons (for example, handles on knives to overcome finger marks). Most of my work carries a high polish and minimal decoration. I seek to produce innovative yet timeless pieces that are comfortable to wear and or use."
Specialist Techniques: Forging, hand raising and sinking, high polish and inlays of exotic woods, shells and stones.
Dr Povl Larsen is Senior Research Officer in Innovation Management at the National Centre for Product Design and Development research. His research interests are also in wearable technology, design methods and user needs as Project Leader at the Smart Clothes and Wearable Technology Research Group, at Newport School of Art, Media and Design, Wales.
